🗓️ Highfill Parks Advisory Committee Update – October 6, 2025

The Highfill Parks Advisory Committee met on October 6 to plan exciting fall events, hear community feedback, and discuss improvements for our city park. There’s so much happening this season, so here’s your full guide to fun, festivities, and community updates!


✅ Meeting Minutes Approved

The committee approved the minutes from the September 16 meeting, keeping everyone up to date on past discussions and plans.


🗣️ Community Voices

Resident Sylvia Trejo, owner of A&L Dumpsters Rental, asked about the Fall Tree Giveaway. Great news—residents with Highfill utility services can pick up two free trees per household! Just bring a recent utility bill.

Sylvia also offered to bring a decorated 8-yard dumpster and hand out goodie bags at Trunk or Treat, which the committee loved! Thank you, Sylvia, for your creative spirit and support of our community.


🚓 National Night Out – TONIGHT!

📍 Silver Meadows Subdivision POA Field | 🕖 Starts at 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM | October 7

Highfill is gearing up for a fun and community-focused National Night Out celebration! Here’s what’s planned:

What to expect:

  • First Responders & Special Guests: Highfill Police & Fire Departments, Pafford EMS, and Arkansas Game & Fish Commission (with Lt. Fletcher) will host hands-on activities for kids and families.
  • Forestry Fun: Scott Vanhook and the team from the Arkansas Department of Agriculture – Forestry Division will have a booth with giveaways.
  • AT&T Fun Zone: Spin the prize wheel, play games, and take home surprises!
  • Food & Refreshments: Sam’s Club donated hot dogs and buns, water donations are expected, and additional treats are coming from local partners.
  • Activities & Entertainment: Meet neighbors, thank our first responders, enjoy a live DJ, coloring stations, and activities for all ages!

Whether you’re new to Highfill or a longtime resident, National Night Out is the perfect chance to meet your neighbors, show appreciation for our first responders, and enjoy an evening full of fun – featuring a live DJ, coloring stations, and activities for everyone!

🌳 Fall Tree Giveaway – Friday, October 17

📍 Highfill City Park | 🕖 Starts at 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Grab your free trees at Highfill City Park! Each household can pick up two trees while supplies last. Just bring proof that you’re a Highfill utility customer—water, sewer, or trash. City staff, committee members, and Scott Vanhook from the Arkansas Department of Agriculture – Forestry Division will be on hand to help you select the perfect trees. Check out the available tree selection below!

 Paw Paw
A small, native fruit tree known for its tropical-tasting fruit, often compared to banana and mango. Grows well in partial shade and produces large, lush leaves that add a unique look to the landscape.

 White Flowering Dogwood
A classic ornamental tree in Arkansas. Celebrated for its showy spring blossoms, red fall foliage, and winter berries that attract birds. Perfect for smaller yards and shaded spots.

 Water Lily Magnolia
A stunning, medium-sized tree with large, fragrant pink-white flowers in early spring. Known for its beauty and elegance, it works well as a focal point in the yard.

 Blackgum
Also called Black Tupelo, this native tree is prized for its brilliant red fall color. It grows tall and straight, providing excellent shade and habitat for wildlife.

 Water Oak
A fast-growing oak with a rounded crown, common in the South. Provides excellent shade and supports wildlife with its abundant acorns. Great for larger yards.

 Shumard Oak
A stately, hardy oak with a strong, upright form. Known for its deep red fall foliage and longevity, making it a classic choice for shade and landscape value.


🎃 Trunk or Treat – Saturday, October 25

📍 Highfill City Park | 🕖 3:00–5:00 PM

Get ready for a spooktacular afternoon! Trunks will line the path, and kids of all ages can enjoy treats. Local businesses and residents are encouraged to decorate and participate—let’s make it a Halloween to remember!

  • No parking in the field—please park around the park.
  • Trunks will be set up between the road and walking path.

🍂 Fall Festival – Saturday, November 15

📍 Highfill City Park | 🕖 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

The Highfill Fall Festival is back! Bring your family and friends for food, fun, and local vendors!

  • Vendors: Set up along the walking trail.
  • Food Trucks: Near the play area and trees.
  • Photo Station: Set up on the stage for fun family pictures.
  • Cakewalk: Postponed until next year for more planning and potential bakery donations.

Vendor Registration is available on our city website or by clicking here. So far, four vendors have signed up, including local Highfill business, Chubby Bunny Company. Supporting local vendors helps our community thrive!


🎄 Christmas in the Park – Coming Soon!

We’re planning a magical holiday celebration!

  • 🎅 Santa & The Grinch are booked!
  • 🍪 Cookies will be homemade and donated by neighbors and committee members.
  • 🌭 Downtown Dogs & The Black Howler Brewery are donating 100 hot dogs and 100 hot chocolates.
  • 📸 Photo Backdrop: We’re working on a better setup for Santa photos.
  • 🎁 Custom Ornaments: A new design is in the works—stay tuned!
  • 🔌 Electricity Expansion: Plans are underway to add more outlets to the park.
  • 📷 Photography: A local photographer may be on-site to capture memories.

⚽ Park Maintenance & Soccer Storage

Updates from NWA United FC:

  • Fence Repair: A fallen gate was reported and scheduled for repair.
  • Storage Request: NWA United FC has requested to place a 150-gallon container for soccer equipment, with a signed waiver acknowledging items are stored at the group’s own risk. Committee members approved of this request with the container to be placed on the northeast side of the stage.

NWA United FC is a free youth soccer club that brings the joy of the game to kids in our community! The team practices right here at Highfill City Park, giving young athletes a chance to grow their skills, make friends, and have fun. Want to get involved or learn more? Visit nwaunitedfc.com.


🌐 New! Online Tools

We’ve added two new features to the city website:

  • 📝 Vendor Registration: Sign up online to participate in the Highfill Fall Festival.
  • 💬 Public Feedback: Share your ideas or concerns. Urgent items will be addressed quickly; others will be reviewed at future meetings.

🛠️ Future Park Improvements

The committee is working on both short-term fixes and long-term upgrades to make Highfill City Park even better. Projects being discussed:

1. Fence & Grounds Maintenance

  • Plans to replace the current fence with a safer, low-maintenance option.
  • Additional mowing and trimming support needed near play areas.

2. Park Signage

  • Install bright, new signs for visibility and aesthetics.

3. Mini Free Library

  • Convert the underused Blessing Box into a weatherproof community book exchange for all ages.

4. Pickleball Court Proposal

  • A new court is being considered for the south side of the park.
  • Estimated cost: $7,000–$50,000 depending on design.

5. Water & Amenities

  • Plans for water fountains (for people and pets) and future restroom locations considered.

6. Pavilion & Recreation Enhancements

  • Possible new pavilions and basketball court upgrades, and additional gathering space.
  • Horseshoe areas may be removed to create more gathering space.

7. Tree & Landscape Management

  • Remove hazardous trees.
  • Memorial trees and benches will be preserved and maintained.
  • Improve long-term planting plans.

8. Long-Term Vision

  • Focus on repairing existing infrastructure before adding new features.
  • Community input emphasized for safety, sustainability, and accessibility.

HPAC aims to make Highfill City Park safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone.

💰 Financial Update

  • Community Center Rentals: Already exceeded the $1,000 revenue goal for the year!
  • Community Events: $14,259 allocated for Christmas in the Park.
  • Building & Grounds: $12,000 available for upgrades, plus $4,000 for general repairs, and $2,000 for contract labor.

Small improvement requests can be submitted to the Director of Community Development while larger requests will be presented to City Council for approval.
